Freenas bge0 error. watchdog timeout

August 6, 2013 2 comments

Just reference. This is from a article from Internet.

Currently I got a HP DL 120 in production with a HP NC107i PCIe Gigabit NIC (NetXtreme BCM5723) and FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE #0 installed. At first those entries in /var/log/messages were ignored because everything was running smooth and the system seemed normal and stable:

bge0: watchdog timeout -- resetting
bge0: link state changed to DOWN
bge0: link state changed to UP

With increasing network load there were a few unusual latency peaks and finally the NIC shut down or the system was frozen (w/out any messages of course). I couldn’t figure that one out, it is a remote box w/out KVM access. After some research I found that In order to get rid of those messages you need to disable bge0 ASF driver features by adding

to your /boot/loader.conf – and yes, you really need to reboot your machine since sysctl hw.bge.allow_asf=”0″ will fail with “sysctl: oid ‘hw.bge.allow_asf’ is read only”. Those messages are gone now and the system seems stable as it should be.

Have fun!

p.s.: edit 25th of June 2012: The system is stable, issue solved.

USB disk with DOS+WINPE+linux multibootable

July 8, 2011 1 comment

WIndows (xp or Windows 7) / Fedora 14

Imation 8GB flash disk.

1, Under windows, use HPUSBFW tool to format the usb disk as USB-HDD and check bootable while format.
2, use another usb disk to boot and ghost the 8GB usb ‘disk > image’, and then ‘ image > disk’ to reduce the first dos fat32 partition to about 700MB.
3, Under Linux, create new partition about 800MB after the first partition. and change type to ntfs, mkfs.ntfs /dev/sd**
4, mount the new partition and copy all files windows pe to the second partition.

Test boot to dos or WinPE:
the usb disk can boot to dos
use tools to make the second partition active and the disk can boot to PE.

5, install debian 6.0 , as the debian 6 is using grub 2.0, I’m not familiar with it.
5, install fedora 14. then it will got two boot record linux and pe. manually add the DOS to grub boot record.

Perfect , All done.

disk clone multibootable systems. moving existing multibootable system from one disk to another. Winxp+Win7+Linux

1, use ghost to clone windows, then windows can boot normally. and multi bookable is ok.
1, use live linux to boot and partition new disk as the same as old one.
2, mount two disk and copy all files to new one.
use cp * des -r -p
3, update file and the fstab file with hard drive name and uuid of the new disk. use ‘blkid’ to list all uuid of the partition.
4, update grub if doesn’t boot, live linux and do this:
1), boot to live linux
2), mount partition / to /mnt
3), mount boot partition to /mnt/boot if boot is in a separate partition.
4), mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
5), mount -o bind /proc /mnt/proc
6), chroot /mnt
7), install grub by using ‘grub-install’ or use this:
root (hd0,2) which the (hd0, 2) third partition on disk 0 is the boot partition.
setup (hd0)

Waiting for Fedora 15… Difficult for me.

HP T5550 arrived.

April 7, 2011 1 comment

The new model of HP Thinclient which the replacement of HP T5540 – T5550 arrived at my office.

VIA Nano U3500 1G CPU

VX900 chipset – VT1708/A Azalia HDAC build in

1G DDR3 Memery

Sil164CTG64 VGA/DVI conventer

Broadcom 57780 1000 NIC

JM20330 IDE SATA bridge chip

512MB flash disk

It has a SATA 7pin+15pin combin connector on board and a same hidden SATA port near the 44pin PATA port.

It has a Mini PCI-E port on board.

I had connect a 3.5” SATA hard drive to the onboard SATA port and It can install Xp and Squeeze. But the built in openchrome driver doesn’t support VX900 chip. Need to update openchrome. Will send a pic next few days.

Now I can add few pictures.

Add 3.5” SATA hard drive to HP Thin Client T5540.

March 8, 2011 18 comments

Learned from this link that T5540 has a potential SATA port. I desperately need more PCs. So add a additional hard drive to make the thin client works like a traditional pc.

The power port near the sata port doesn’t have +12V power. connect the +12V power from power supply directly. 2.5” disk doesn’t need +12V power.
